Mohideen Baig’s family gets emotional at Rupavahini recording

The inaugural episode of ‘Songs that Stirred Hearts – Echoes of the Second Generation’, a musical programme conceptualised by Transport, Highways, and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana, was recorded from the Ananda Samarakoon Studio of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).

This programme is a collaborative effort between the SLBC and the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC).

The inaugural programme was dedicated to the prolific and talented singer Alhaj Mohideen Baig, who contributed over a thousand songs to the Sri Lankan music scene. The programme featured live performances of his songs by his son, Ishaq Baig, and his daughter, Moinah Begum. They also shared background stories and notable events from their father’s artistic career.

The programme will air this Tuesday (tomorrow) at 10.00 pm on Rupavahini and SLBC.

During the programme, Ishaq Baig and Moinah Begum shared emotional memories of their father’s last moments, highlighting his statement that although he did not amass great wealth, his children would never go hungry as long as the last Sinhala person lived in this country.

Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana expressed his admiration for Alhaj Mohideen Baig, describing him as an extraordinary artiste who changed the path of Sri Lankan music and the arts. He noted that Baig’s songs would forever be remembered by the public and that his children continue to hold valuable experiences from their father’s legacy. The programme provides an opportunity for the audience to learn about many unknown aspects of his life.

Notably, the programme also highlighted the challenges Baig faced while singing the song ‘Buddhan Saranan Gachchami’ for the film Angulimala, which many were unaware of. The series aims to present many such unknown but inspiring stories from the second generation of prominent artistes.

Former Deputy Director-General of the National Institute of Education, musician Sudath Samarasinha contributed as a special resource person for the event.

State Minister Ashoka Priyantha, SLBC Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe, SLRC Chairman Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage, State Development and Construction Corporation Chairman Kushan Devinda, and executive members from both corporations attended the event. The programme will continue to be broadcast weekly, honouring and commemorating notable artistes.
