MP Archchuna Ramanathan’s behaviour in Parliament will be probed – Speaker

Speaker Dr. Ashoka Ranwala said that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted on Independent MP Archchuna Ramanathan’s behaviour in Parliament and certain controversial comments he had made on videos posted on social media and a decision will be taken in the next Parliament session, after consulting all MPs on whether an investigation will be conducted into his actions.

He said that the statements made by the MP as an individual do not coincide with the aspirations of the people of the area he represents and this is clear from the way the people of the North voted in the last General election.

The Speaker made these remarks while speaking to the media following his visit to Kandy recently.

He said that MP Ramanathan had sat in the Opposition Leader’s chair before the official process of appointing the Speaker had begun.

The Speaker said that the conduct of a public representative in Parliament demonstrates to the public the discipline, behaviour and ethics that he possesses and that if someone fails to maintain it in that manner, it is a serious problem.

The Speaker said that if any unethical act has taken place in the Chamber, an investigation should be conducted into it and that a decision can be taken after a formal investigation.

Dr. Ranwala stated that the mandate given by the people, which was reflected in the results of the last General Election, is for a respectable Parliament and that the responsibility of creating a Parliament that can demonstrate the virtues of democracy to the world through collective decision-making is entrusted to all public representatives.
