United Republic Front Leader, MP Patali Champika Ranawaka said the process of providing meals to schoolchildren is extremely important according to a recommendation made by the Economic Stabilisation Committee. He said that it has been revealed that 600,000 Sri Lankan schoolchildren attend school without food and the Economic Stabilization Committee had suggested that nutritious meals should be provided free to schoolchildren.

MP Ranawaka said that it is extremely important that it has been implemented by now. He said this in response to a question raised during the observation tour of the Micro Cars Factory in Polgahawela.

He said a situation has been created that boys are leaving school due to the food crisis, but such a situation has reduced with the provision of food.

He said that this programme is also helpful for the development of the country’s production process, and also a program should be formulated for the promotion of small and medium scale products. Therefore, he suggested that it should be expanded under the Aswasuma programme.
