Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media, Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said the Muslim people, including businessmen involved in the gem export sector from Beruwela, had pledged their support to President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the upcoming Presidential election, as he was the leader who brought the country to its current state by implementing a clear and viable economic programme.
The Minister said MP Marjan Faleel who was nominated for the National list of SLPP, had met former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and while expressing his respect and love for the Party, had added that, even though all of these things remain unchanged, he has decided to support President Wickremesinghe in this year’s Presidential Election, for the well-being of the country.
The Minister said most of the members of the SLPP in the Kalutara district are currently working to ensure President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s victory at the Presidential Election, and they will participate in a meeting called by former Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, the SLPP district leader.
The Minister made this statement on Saturday (3) while joining a meeting with the business community, including MP Marjan Faleel, who are engaged in gem export business in Beruwala area.
The Minister, at the meeting, further said, “the President is working to turn the business sector into an export-oriented one. Like in Bangkok and Hong Kong, the President is working to create a completely free market situation for the export of gems. The relevant laws for this purpose was passed in Parliament recently.
Also, he is the one who brought a new act for the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to ban money printing on a regular basis, which has constantly increased the tax rate in the country. He also passed the Debt Control Act so that any government which comes to power cannot borrow at high interest rates. Not only that. He brought a Financial Management Act so that money cannot be allocated through the Budget for politically motivated false promises. Accordingly, there is a separate office in Parliament to prepare the Budget from now on. President Ranil Wickremesinghe is the only candidate at this year’s Presidential Election with an economic arsenal capable of taking this country to the pinnacle of economic development”.
