National People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Duminda Dissanayake too have stepped down from the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) yesterday.
Participating the debate on the No Confidence Motion against Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene for the second day, he said that it was pointless participating in COPE meetings under the chairmanship of Rohitha Abeygunawardane.
The MP said that the current COPE Committee Chairman has been accused of fraud and corruption, so he has decided to resign from the COPE Committee membership.
Meanwhile, the SLFP MP Duminda Dissanayake, sending his resignation to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena in writing, said he decided to quit the COPE membership as the committee no longer has the transparency counted on by the members of the public.
SLPP MP Wasantha Yapa Bandara’s name was announced as a COPE member by Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa shortly after the parliamentary session commenced yesterday morning, however, the MP declared his resignation with immediate effect. Thus, the number of members who have resigned from the COPE committee increases to 10. They are including MPs Eran Wickramaratne,Gamini Waleboda, Prof.Charitha Herath, Dayasiri Jayasekara, S. M. Marikkar, Hesha Withanage, Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, Wasantha Yapa Bandara, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Duminda Dissanayake.
