MPs propose Parliamentary Committee on Black July

A proposal to appoint a parliamentary select committee to conduct a comprehensive study of the 1983 Black July violence and submit proposals and recommendations to Parliament was handed over to the Deputy Speaker on Friday (Oct. 9).

The proposal was submitted with the signatures of 51 government MPs.

The proposed committee would examine the events surrounding Black July and present its findings, along with recommendations, to Parliament.

Black July refers to the anti-Tamil violence that erupted in Sri Lanka in July 1983, marking a significant escalation in ethnic tensions in the country. (Newswire)
