The Motor Transport Department (MTD) and Sri Lanka Customs officials have begun an investigation regarding the fraudulent registration of 200 vehicles, the Criminal Investigation Department reported before Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasinghe yesterday (12).
The Criminal Investigation Department informed Court that it has summoned the ‘original files’ from the Motor Transport Department regarding the registration of the 200 vehicles related to this investigation.
According to a petition received by the Inspector General of Police, Chief Inspector Sugath Kumara, OIC of the Criminal Investigation Department’s Group Robbery Investigation Unit, reported these matters to the Court.
In this complaint, which included the registration numbers and vehicle numbers of more than 200 vehicles, it has been further stated that the relevant luxury vehicles were not properly cleared by the Sri Lankan Customs, and the Criminal Investigation Department has presented facts to Court. The Criminal Investigation Department had reported the facts to the court that these vehicles were brought to Sri Lanka without proper clearance from the Sri Lankan Customs by submitting false information to the computer data system of the Motor Transport Department, and a detailed report with the names of several officials responsible for it was also given in the complaint.
Accordingly, the Motor Transport Department and Sri Lanka Customs have started investigations into these 200 vehicles which were allegedly fraudulently registered, and have informed that the original files maintained by the Motor Transport Department regarding those vehicles should be handed over to the CID, the Criminal Investigation Department informed court.
