Multi-million fraud at major private hospital in Colombo

A senior Police officer says that a special unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has begun an investigation into a multi-million rupee fraud that took place in a major private hospital in Colombo. The officer said that the special discount of 20% given by the hospital to the patients receiving treatment in the hospital has been fraudulently obtained by six employees of the hospital in Billing Department.

According to a complaint made by its Directors regarding this fraud, statements have been recorded from about 200 including a large number of patients.

Sources say that when a patient leaves the hospital after treatment, the total bill must be paid and after a written request is made for the special discount, the normal procedure of the hospital is to reimburse it.

By taking advantage of the ignorance of the majority of the patients about the special discount, a group of six officials in the billing department had forged letters and fraudulently obtained the special discount. Special discounts are paid by petty cash accounts.

As soon as the fraud was discovered, six officials in the Billing Department, were suspended and complaints were made to the CID.
