SLPP MPs Namal Rajapaksa and D.V.Chanaka had visited Yoshitha Rajapaksa, who is detained in Colombo Remand Prison yesterday.
According to the prison law, there is no opportunity to meet the prisoners on Sundays, but Namal Rajapaksa who is the elder brother of Yoshitha and Chanaka had visited the Colombo Remand Prison in the morning to inquire about the well-being of Yoshitha Rajapaksa, under privileges granted to a Member of Parliament.
Yoshitha Rajapaksa was brought to Colombo remand prison on Saturday at around 6.50 pm and is kept in the ‘M-2’ ward till today (27) morning. A senior Prisons Department officer said that he took food from the prison and slept on a mat like all other prisoners.
He also stated that when Rajapaksa was brought to remand on the orders of court, he was referred to the prison doctor and it was recommended that his health condition is good.
Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the second son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was arrested by Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officers on Saturday over money laundering charges.
Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manatunga said Rajapaksa faces charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act No.5 of 2006 in relation to the purchase of a residence and land in Ratmalana for Rs. 34 million. He said that the arrest was carried out on the Attorney General’s instructions after sufficient evidence emerged to identify him as a suspect.
Yoshitha was produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeevani at her official residence and the Magistrate ordered Rajapaksa be remanded till today (27).
