SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa, currently in remand custody, has sent a message to supporters attending the party’s “Jana Satana” rally in Anuradhapura, saying he would not bow to what he described as the government’s political pressure.
In the message issued from the Colombo Remand Prison, Rajapaksa thanked supporters for their solidarity and described the Anuradhapura rally as a “decisive new beginning” for the SLPP’s political movement.
“I see you from behind the iron bars of the Colombo Remand Prison. From here, I feel the warmth of the brotherhood you are showing me,” Rajapaksa said.
Quoting former South African President Nelson Mandela’s words, “Difficulties break some men but make others,” Rajapaksa said challenges had made his political movement stronger and credited his father with teaching him to become stronger when facing adversity.
Rajapaksa launched a broad attack on the NPP government, accusing it of failing to honour its election promises and claiming that the cost of living and tax burden were placing pressure on the public, including small and medium-sized businesses, farmers, fishermen and workers.
He also accused the government of politicising state investigative institutions and claimed allegations against individuals connected to the government were not being investigated fairly. The claims were made by Rajapaksa and were not independently verified.
Rajapaksa further criticised the government over constitutional reforms, the delay in Provincial Council elections and what he described as a lack of opportunities for young people entering the job market.
Concluding his message, Rajapaksa said he would not surrender to what he called the government’s “political power” and would not be intimidated.
“Our determination cannot be imprisoned,” he said, calling on supporters to remain peaceful, disciplined and respectful of the law.
Rajapaksa is currently being held at the Colombo Remand Prison after being remanded in connection with an ongoing investigation. (Newswire)
