National Education Colleges to become universities

Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana stated that with the aim of making the entire teaching community in Sri Lanka graduates, steps will be taken to upgrade the existing National Colleges of Education to the status of universities.

He stated this at the press conference to announce the Cabinet decisions held at the Government Information Department yesterday (3). As per the decision of the Cabinet on December 4, 2019, an expert committee headed by Gunapala Nanayakkara has been appointed to make recommendations on the legal method to be followed to improve the National College of Education as a university. Accordingly, based on the recommendations of the said committee, in order to instruct a draftsman to take the necessary steps to prepare a new Bill for the promotion of 19 out of the 20 existing National Colleges of Education into university campuses and to establish legal provisions related to the establishment of a new university called the Sri Lanka University of Education. Cabinet has approved the proposal presented by the Education Minister.
