National IT policy for digital economy to be unveiled on Nov. 11

The Government will unveil a national IT policy with a view to creating a digital economy on November 11.

The policy is being drafted by the country’s IT intellectuals under the auspices of the World Bank. Accordingly, Technology State Minister Kanaka Herath said that under the leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the IT national policy for a digital economy will be unveiled.

He said this at a media conference held on Wednesday (6) at the President’s Media Centre, Colombo. At present, 40 percent of the world’s economic activities has been digitized. Digitization has contributed less than five percent to Sri Lanka’s national economic performance.

The State Minister also said that the Government has implemented a number of programmes in the short, medium and long term with the aim of increasing the rate of digitization by 2030. He also emphasized that 28 programmes will be implemented for the development of this sector from October to November this year.
