The Sri Lanka Navy brought ashore an ill fisherman who was in distress, onboard a local multiday fishing trawler, about 200 nautical miles (370 km) off Galle. Coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo, the fisherman was retrieved mid sea by SLNS Vijayabahu. Once brought ashore on Wednesday (24), he was rushed to the Karapitiya, Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
The local multiday fishing trawler “Suranga 04” (Reg No. IMUL-A- 2391 TLE) had left the Tangalle Fisheries Harbour on June 9, with 6 fishermen onboard, on a fishing voyage. Meanwhile, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR) alerted MRCC Colombo, at Navy Headquarters, that a crew member onboard the fishing trawler was in distress at sea, and requested the Navy’s assistance to transfer him ashore for treatment.
The Sri Lanka Navy in coordination with MRCC Colombo continues to exemplify its dedication and unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives within Sri Lanka’s search and rescue jurisdiction, serving as a beacon of hope and security for seafarers and the fishing community.
