A Sri Lanka Navy’s firefighting team from the Western Naval Command contained a fire that erupted in a container at the terminal of Bandaranaike Quay IV (BQ IV) in the Colombo Port on the night of Thursday (30).
At nearly 1945 hrs, smoke was observed emanating from a container at the BQ IV terminal. In response, the Colombo Port Control Office reached out to the Western Naval Command Operations Room for support from a Navy firefighting team.
The Navy mobilised a team specialised in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) affairs from the Western Naval Command. Firefighting vehicles were also deployed to the scene.
The Navy firefighters unlocked the container, uncovering that a portion of the stored cleaning chemicals had caught fire. With the help of port workers and the port fire brigade, the chemicals were safely removed to contain the fire and prevent its spread.
