Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage says the Nawinna Sports Ground, currently undergoing development, is expected to be opened to the public by December this year.
Minister Gamage stated that once completed, the sports ground will be open to the public completely free of charge, allowing local residents, athletes and young people to engage in sporting and recreational activities without any payment.
The Minister made the announcement following an inspection of the ongoing construction work at the sports ground on Sunday (11).
According to the Ministry of Sports, the project involves transforming a previously abandoned garbage dumping site into a modern sports ground equipped with facilities to meet the sporting and recreational needs of the public.
The foundation stone for the project was laid on November 13, 2025, under the patronage of the Sports Minister, and construction has now reached its final stage.
The Ministry said the project forms part of broader efforts to develop sports infrastructure and promote a sporting culture in Sri Lanka.
Local residents and athletes in the area have also expressed their appreciation for the development project, the Ministry added. (Newswire)
