Officials of the Kandy Election Office cancelled a reception organised by a candidate of the New Democratic Front(NDF) for his party supporters at a hotel in Peradeniya where it was planned to serve liquor and dinner.
Officials at the Kandy Election Office said the event was stopped as it was in violation of election rules.
Following a complaint submitted by election monitors PAFFREL, the election office officials who went to the hotel in Peradeniya on Friday evening had informed the hotel administration that it is a violation of the election rules to host parties by candidates contesting the election for the public.
Former Ministers Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Anuradha Jayaratne were among those slated to attend the event, sources said.
According to the Kandy election office, around 100 people were expected to attend the party organised by the New Democratic Front candidate.
