Necessary arrangements have been completed to get MOP fertilizer

Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, states that all arrangements have been completed for Sri Lanka to receive the stock of 55,000 metric tons of MOP fertilizer to be provided to Sri Lanka by the World Food Programme.

Arrangements had been made to get this stock of fertilizer since last March, but due to the inefficiency of government officials, the arrangements were dragging on. Accordingly, the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries informed the officials concerned to complete all the work within this week and to take immediate steps to sign the relevant agreements.

Accordingly, the minister also said that 55,000 metric tons of MOP fertilizer, which is the most essential fertilizer for paddy cultivation, will be provided free of charge to all paddy farmers in the country in the next two seasons.

Generally, the amount of MOP fertilizer required for paddy cultivation in this country is 25,000 metric tons in one cropping season. Accordingly, the stock of this fertilizer is enough for two years and the results can be obtained by this MOP fertilizer applied to the soil for several more years.

The MOP fertilizer, which is normally priced high in the market, will be provided free of cost to the farmers in full.
