Never leave for jobs on tourist visas – State Minister

Foreign Affairs State Minister Tharaka Balasuriya said one should go in the right way and with good inquisitiveness when leaving the country for jobs.

He said that even though they always give out notices not to go for foreign jobs on tourist visas, if people continue to resort to illegal means, this problem cannot be solved.

He said this while attending a press conference held at the Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday (16).

Speaking further Balasuriya said; We were able to free 20 of the 54 Sri Lankans stuck in Myanmar .The ambassador and others met the Deputy Foreign Minister and the Home Affairs Minister of Myanmar. They also met the governor. After that, our ambassador constantly kept in touch with those officials and dealt with the Myanmar government and the Thailand government. We constantly told them to help free these people.

“Yesterday, 20 people have come to Thailand from Myanmar. The ambassador had asked about the problems and the needs of that Sri Lankans and provided necessary facilities. I also connected with the group through video technology. I did not see that all of them have health problems. Sometimes that group will have to be referred for counselling,” he said.

“However, as we see, this problem will not end. We have to give more attention to the people to be rescued than to the already rescued people. Therefore, our attention is focused on how to save

this other group. Also, if people go for jobs in such places, we will not see that this problem will be solved.

Recently we got to know that five students from Dubai have gone to Myanmar,” he said.
