The Ministry of Health has introduced a new set of guidelines aimed at ensuring the efficient use of water and electricity in public healthcare institutions while minimising wastage without affecting patient care.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry, the guidelines focus on monitoring water and electricity consumption, improving data reporting, ensuring proper maintenance of systems and encouraging staff participation in efficient resource management.
The Ministry stated that the guidelines were developed considering the operational requirements of healthcare institutions, particularly the need to maintain uninterrupted services in operating theatres, intensive care units, laboratories and sanitation facilities.
The initiative is expected to reduce unnecessary water and electricity consumption, improve the efficient use of public funds and strengthen the sustainability of healthcare services.
The guidelines were officially launched on Wednesday (21) at the National Hospital in Colombo, under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Health Hansaka Wijemuni, to mark World Energy Day on October 22.
The guidelines were subsequently presented to Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa yesterday (22) by Consultant Dr. Upuli Wijemanna, Director of the Organisational Development Unit of the Ministry’s Planning Division.
The Ministry added that the initiative aims to strengthen resource management across public healthcare institutions while ensuring the continuous delivery of quality healthcare services to the public. (Newswire)
