New law preventing distorted religious teachings in the offing

The Government has decided to enact new laws to prevent religious teachings and practices being intentionally distorted by parties, and which could cause disharmony between communities, Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister Vidura Wickramanayaka said. The decision has been taken after several incidents of suicide linked to a religious cult recently, he said.

Investigations conducted by the Police have revealed that an individual named Ruwan Prasanna Gunaratne (47), when preaching, had promoting the idea of suicide for the next birth soon and accordingly, seven incidents of suicide had been reported across the country related to the said religious preaching.

Ruwan Prasanna also died by suicide recently at his residence in Homagama.

Minister Wickramanayaka further said that the Cabinet of Ministers has already appointed a committee to look into the matters related to distortion of religious teachings and practices.

The Minister stressed that it is necessary to create an environment where everyone can practise their religion within the legal framework.
