Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena announced that discussions are underway to form a new political alliance, spearheaded by MPs and political Parties who have chosen to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming Presidential Election, contrary to decisions made by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
Speaking to the Media, after receiving blessings from the Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of the Buddhist Sangha’s Malwathu Chapter, Prime Minister Gunawardena emphasised his unwavering support and blessings for the establishment of this new political force.
“Many MPs from the SLPP, who have supported the Government’s progress thus far, have rejected the Party’s recent decisions and have opted to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Presidential Election. These MPs, representing not only the SLPP, but also other political Parties, are now exploring the formation of a new political alliance,” said Prime Minister Gunawardena.
He further stated that the country, having navigated through difficult times over the past two years, is now on the right path. “We are all working together to safeguard and further advance the achievements made. MPs across all levels, from Local Government bodies to Parliament, are united. No one should fear that they will not be able to secure a candidacy in the upcoming elections. We will not allow any threats against them. We recognise the need for a new political force, and I fully support and bless the ongoing discussions to create this alliance.”
The event was also attended by MP Yadamini Gunawardena.
