It has been decided to introduce a new price control mechanism to reduce the price of medicines.

Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Hansaka Wijayamuni stated that under the new system, the maximum price ranges at which a medicine imported into the country can be sold will be published in the Gazette.

Accordingly, the maximum price at which a medicine imported into the country can be sold is Rs. 01.65 per rupee.

The Deputy Minister pointed out that regulations will be enacted to transfer the powers of regulating the price of medicines to the National Medicines Regulatory Authority.

With the imposition of new regulations, the prices of medicines should be determined at the port itself.

The Deputy Minister pointed out that price regulation will be carried out for every stock of medicines brought into the island.

Dr. Hansaka Wijayamuni stated that the National Medicines Regulatory Authority’s Price Control Committee will be empowered to investigate whether it is being implemented properly.
