New system proposed for Rs. 750 monthly allowance paid to parents of war heroes

The Ranaviru Seva Authority has announced plans to introduce a new verification system for the monthly Rs. 750 “Mapiya Rekawarana” allowance provided to eligible parents of war heroes.

The allowance, introduced under a 2011 budget proposal, supports surviving parents of military personnel who died during operational duties, went missing in action or were medically discharged due to service-related disabilities.

The scheme applies to eligible parents of personnel recruited into the Tri-Services before May 19, 2009.

According to the Authority, 32,392 parents have been identified as eligible for the allowance, while 16,805 beneficiaries are currently receiving payments.

Under the existing system, beneficiaries must submit an annual Life Certificate certified by their Grama Niladhari to confirm their eligibility for continued payments.

The certificates must be submitted between November 1 and February 28 of the following year.

The proposed system will allow beneficiary lists to be prepared at Divisional Secretariat level and forwarded to Grama Niladharis for verification.

Officials will verify whether beneficiaries are alive, remove deceased individuals from the lists and collect the required certificates.

Special arrangements will also be made for elderly and disabled parents who cannot visit Grama Niladhari offices.

In such cases, Grama Niladharis will visit beneficiaries at their residences to verify their status and facilitate the issuance of Life Certificates.

The initiative is intended to streamline allowance payments and reduce difficulties faced by elderly beneficiaries. (Newswire)
