The New Zealand High Commissioner to Sri Lanka met with the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday (30) at the ministry. A group of officials including Mr. Janaka Dharmakeerthi, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries participated in this event.
The New Zealand government’s support for the promotion of Sri Lanka’s dairy industry and HAAS avocado, pineapples and mangoes grown in our country were discussed here.
Currently, HAAS avocado, which is in high demand in the foreign market, has started cultivating in the central hills of Sri Lanka. Mrs. Shiromani Edirimanna, Additional Secretary for Agricultural Technology, said that the New Zealand government should continue to support this avocado cultivation.
The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, who expressed his opinion, stated that about 60 percent of the local milk requirement still has to be met by importing. Therefore, in order to increase milk production in our country, it is necessary to introduce new technology and import high-quality semen and use the high technology in dairy industries. .
The High Commissioner mentioned that the New Zealand government is able to provide all the necessary technical support for milk production in this country, and those measures will be taken in consultation with the New Zealand government.
Also, in this discussion, the High Commissioner agreed to provide opportunities for the export of pineapples and mangoes produced in Sri Lanka to New Zealand.
