Nimal Jayawickrama – the Geophysicist who shone in seven sports disciplines

The Richmond team was in a very strong position in the final stage of the 1967 ‘Lover’s Battle’, between Richmond and Mahinda Colleges, Galle. But Mahindians were able to force a draw because of the fine bowling spell by Nimal Jayawickrama. The Richmond team in their second innings were comfortably placed before Nimal Jayawickrama turned the game by claiming four wickets for 12 runs and was adjudged best bowler of the match.

Nimal brought fame to during his school days from 1954 to 1967 by excelling in various sporting events. He was a member of the inaugural rugby team of the school playing in wing three quarter. He took part in cricket, football, athletic and also became as all island champion in the javelin throw.

Nimal showed his prowess in gymnastic, wrestling and karate after he enter the Peradeniya University. He won colours in seven sports and established two records in the javelin throw event and was picked as a best sportsman of the Peradeniya University.

He also captained the university sports team during the 1973 Sports Festival held in Russia. Jayawickrama who was affectionally called ‘Bunny’ by his friends was included in the Sri Lanka squad for the Asian Athletic Championship by obtaining first place in the javelin throw event.

His sports career ended after he passed out with Science Honours as a Geophysicist but later he was elected as Secretary of the Nationalise Services Athletic Association. He also returned to the athletic field and taking part in the 1985 Master’s Games in Singapore he won the silver medal. Now he leaves in retirement after having contributed immensely to the country in the sports field.
