Ninety two MPs last evening unconditionally pledged to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe to achieve victory at the upcoming Presidential Election.
They said only President Wickremesinghe can prevent the country from returning to an era of queues and achieve economic development. Therefore, they pledged to support President Wickremesinghe setting aside their personal politics.
The MPs representing the SLPP said that they arrived at this decision since the party that was created by them with the greatest difficulty had taken a decision based on the wishes of a few. They also said that former Provincial Council members and Local Government representatives have also approved the decision taken by them.
They also thanked the President for normalising a country that was economically unstable and law and order was ignored even to the level of an MP being killed in cold blood on the road.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing the MPs said that in 2022 he accepted the challenge of restoring a country that faced political and economic breakdown not alone and he had a very capable team with him. He said that they did the job with much commitment and this programme of action can only be taken forward by that team.
He said that the first person he asked support at that time was former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and thanked him for the correct decision taken by him at that time.
Ministers Ali Sabry, Ramesh Pathirana, State Minister Kanaka Herath, MPs S.B.Dissanayake, S.M.Chandrasena, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Priyankara Jayaratne, D.B. Herath, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Premnath C. Dolawatte, Janaka Wakkumbura, John Seneviratne, Douglas Devananda, Madhura Withanage, Rajika Wickremasinghe and others spoke at the meeting.
