No coal shortage to run Norochcholai plant – Minister

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera assured that there will be no shortage of coal to operate

the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant.

The Ceylon Coal Company has completed the procurement of 22 coal ships required for this season at the Norochcholai Power Plant. Accordingly the 23rd ship is being unloaded.

According to the generation plan predicted by the Electricity Board for this season, 30 coal ships are required and of them 24, 25 and 26 ships have already reached Puttalam. The 27, 28 and 29 vessels have been arranged to arrive before May 1. Furthermore, the 30th ship will arrive in the first week of May.

Thus, the false and misleading propaganda carried by the trade unions and the social media over the past period have failed. The Lakvijaya power plant will be able to get the required amount of coal to operate at maximum capacity for this season, the Minister noted.
