Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath stated that the Government has not decided to amend the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act of 1951 and currently has no intention to do so.
Addressing the weekly Cabinet briefing, he acknowledged that several organisations have shared their views on the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act, which he said is within their rights and respected by the Government. Minister Herath emphasised that if amendments are deemed necessary for any Religious Act, they would only be made after consultations with religious leaders from the relevant communities. He added that any changes to a Religious Act would require recommendations from the leaders of the respective religion.
