No selling of Government owned institutions – Minister

Power and Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody assured that the Government would not sell state-owned institutions. Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to protecting state ownership in the energy and financial sectors, the Minister emphasised that restructuring efforts would only involve separating electricity generation, transmission, and distribution while maintaining full state ownership.

The Minister expressed these views, addressing officials and employees during an inspection tour at the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai yesterday (31).

“We have always opposed selling these institutions, since before coming into power. Our objectives and policies remain unchanged. We have consistently stated before the elections that state control and ownership of the energy and financial sectors must be safeguarded, and we are working toward that goal. There will be no privatization of these institutions under any circumstances. Through restructuring, we are only separating the components of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. These will remain 100% state-owned entities, with no shares being transferred to private ownership. Therefore, we assure the future of these institutions and the job security of the employees,” the minister stated.

He further highlighted the importance of the Lakvijaya Power Plant, which supplies 40% of the country’s daily electricity demand, in ensuring the stability of the national power grid. The minister stressed that the plant must be maintained at the highest standards using advanced operational methods.

Expressing satisfaction with the current management of the facility, he also acknowledged the contributions of senior executives and employees.

CEB Additional General Manager (Generation) Nalaka Wijekoon, Power Plant Manager G.W. Bamunusinghe and officials attended.
