No special relief for Pastor Jerome under the law: AG

The Attorney General informed the Court of Appeal yesterday (16) that no special relief can be granted under the law to Pastor Jerome Fernando who is accused of making statements insulting religions including Buddhism. Shaminda Wickrama, the senior state counsel who appeared for the Attorney General stated this during thehearing of a writ petition filed by Pastor Jerome Fernando seeking an order to prevent his arrest by the CID.

Sanjeewa Jayawardena PC appearing for the respondents in the petition stated that if the petitioner is ashamed of being arrested at Katunayake Airport when he arrives in Sri Lanka, his clients are not opposed to an alternative course of action.

He said that his clients will not object to the request if he gives an undertaking that he will appear directly before the Criminal Investigation Department as soon as he arrives in Sri Lanka. After considering the facts, the Court ordered that the petition be recalled on October 20.
