Cabinet spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath yesterday announced that government-assisted wildlife holiday bungalows will no longer be offered at concessionary rates to close relatives of Ministers and Ministry officials.
Previously, some bungalows provided discounted rates based on instructions from Ministers.
The Minister further emphasised that anyone in the country will be able to book and enjoy wildlife holiday bungalows managed by the Ministry at standard rates, while Ministry employees and officials will receive slight priority when reserving these facilities. No special room reservations or extra amenities will be extended to Ministers, he said.
In addition, the Government has approved Rs. 166.93 million for the renovation and improvement of these wildlife bungalows. The renovations will maintain the national value of the bungalows to ensure they continue to attract tourists.
Initially, nine bungalows were proposed for renovation. However, the funds were redirected to those in the most urgent need of repairs. As a result, bungalows in Ampara, Ekgaloya, and Riverston will receive the allocated funding for renovation.
