President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said the law will apply to everyone, irrespective of family connections, as he took aim at the Rajapaksa family and the SLPP-led rally in Anuradhapura.
“Father should have told them earlier not to steal, instead of crying now. The law will apply to everyone, whether it’s the mother or grandmother. We have no sympathy for anyone who stole public money,” President Dissanayake said.
Addressing the NPP farmers’ rally in Polonnaruwa on Saturday (12), the President made the remarks while referring to the Rajapaksa family and ongoing action over alleged corruption.
He also targeted the SLPP-led rally being held in Anuradhapura, claiming that several individuals wanted over corruption allegations could be found at the gathering.
“If the CID goes there, they can catch all of them in one place,” the President said.
President Dissanayake alleged that the Anuradhapura rally was not being held in the public interest, but was an attempt by those facing allegations to protect themselves from the law.
His remarks came as the SLPP held a major political rally in Anuradhapura attended by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and several party figures.
The rally is being held while SLPP National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa remains in remand custody following his arrest by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in connection with an investigation into the SriLankan Airlines wide-body aircraft procurement.
