None of the Bribery Commissioners have so far fulfilled responsibilities – Justice Minister

Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC says that none of the Commissioners   who headed the Bribery Commission have properly fulfilled their responsibilities so far. The Minister also stated that by implementing the Anti-Corruption Act (ATA) alongside the 21st Amendment, corruption and fraud in the country will be eradicated to a large extent.

The Minister was speaking when he called on the Mahanayake of the Malwathu Chapter Most Ven. Tibbatuawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera in Kandy on Friday.

He said that the existing Bribery and Corruption Commission does not have sufficient powers and that the situation can be improved by the implementation of the Anti-Corruption Act. He said after the 21st Constitutional Amendment, appointments to the Commission can only be made with the approval of the Constitutional Assembly.

He also said that the Bribery Commission will be strengthened by appointing independent persons as Director General and Commissioners.

While emphasizing that there is no country in the world that has curbed corruption 100 percent, the Minister said if there is the will of politicians and the commitment of officials, corruption can be eliminated very easily in Sri Lanka.
