Serious concerns have been raised over medical arrangements at a major Sri Lanka Cricket domestic tournament after cricketer Chamika Gunasekara suffered a serious injury during the SLC Major Club T20 semifinal at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Gunasekara was injured while bowling during the SSC-NCC semifinal, which was played under lights at the international venue. The match was part of the SLC Major Club T20 Tournament.
He appeared to land awkwardly while delivering the ball and required urgent medical attention and evacuation from the ground. The injury is understood to be serious, although its exact nature and extent are yet to be confirmed.
However, an official present at the venue told NewsWire that there was no doctor, ambulance or even a stretcher immediately available at the ground when the injury occurred.
According to the official, it took nearly 45 minutes before Gunasekara could be taken to hospital for further medical attention.
A player who was at the venue told Newswire that a massage bed had to be used as a makeshift stretcher to carry the injured Gunasekara.
“It is unbelievable that at one of the country’s premier cricket venues, we had to use a massage bed as a stretcher to carry an injured player,” the player said.
The incident has raised serious questions over the medical and emergency arrangements in place for Sri Lanka’s premier domestic cricket competitions.
The semifinal was being played at the R. Premadasa Stadium, one of Sri Lanka’s main international cricket venues, with several players who have represented Sri Lanka taking part in the tournament.
The venue also houses Sri Lanka Cricket’s High Performance Center, adding to concerns over the reported lack of immediate medical support when Gunasekara suffered the injury. (Newswire)
