President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that Sri Lanka will be transformed into a country free of poverty by his government.
The President said this while addressing the National People’s Power (NPP) final election campaign rally in the Gampaha district yesterday (11).
President Dissanayake said that he and his government will make every effort to turn around the country from its current state into a developed nation by transforming the victory given by the citizens at the Presidential Election to him and the mandate for change that will be given by the people at the Parliamentary Election to the NPP.
He said that this victory achieved by the NPP cannot be turned around by any political entity or force.
“The people of this country from the East, West, North and South, irrespective of their race and religion have unanimously joined their hands together and have placed their hopes and trust on him as their President and an NPP-led government to transform and re-build this country.
“The former rulers of the country are trying to find ways of tearing down the country through deceit and falsehood spreading rumours against the NPP in order to come into power and to stay in power. And the people of the country have rejected all of them for that very same reason.
“Parliament needs to be filled with NPP members at the General Election in order to establish a strong government that will eliminate bribery and corruption, clean the House and the country, which will work towards creating the system change and a good and honest political culture that the people have been longing for over decades. The NPP government will not require an opposition in Parliament that will pull its leg to obstruct the development efforts of the country. It is the responsibility of the people to vote for the NPP at the Parliamentary Election in order to achieve these goals.
“A standard will be created by the NPP government to create clean politics and politicians, as there is no such standard currently to assess the politicians and their behaviour which is required to prevent them from doing whatever they want against the law after coming into power.
“The law of the country must be commonly applied to all politicians, just like for the rest of the citizens and the power vested upon the political rulers by the people must never be abused for personal benefits by any politicians while in power.”
President Dissanayake said that the NPP candidates may be new to Parliament but not new to politics and are those equipped with good and honest experience in politics, without any charges of bribery and corruption, who always stood by the people when they faced various struggles and fought for them and genuinely desire to build this nation, unlike the so-called experienced politicians who claim to have the Parliament filled with experienced politicians.
The President emphasised that once the NPP government is formed after the Parliamentary Election, a Cabinet will be set up with less than 25 ministers and a smaller group to assist them in order to begin the work to build and develop the country.
President Dissanayake said that with the three-member NPP interim Cabinet currently governing the country, they have managed to smoothen out the extremely delicate and fragile status of the country’s economy and its woes to a great extent, slowly and systematically, with great discipline and proper conduct as those decisions and actions cannot be rushed.
The President said that most importantly, the debt restructuring programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be concluded by December 2024 and repayment of debt will begin only after 2028.
