National People’s Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake criticised previous governments for halting production in the country. He accused them of prioritising buying and selling to earn massive commissions and amass personal wealth, rather than focusing on the country’s development.
Speaking at a rally in Kantale on Wednesday (28), he highlighted India’s success in manufacturing, contrasting it with Sri Lanka’s practice of primarily engaging in buying and selling goods.
He emphasised that this approach mainly benefits politicians through hefty commissions, leading to their accumulation of massive wealth despite the country’s financial difficulties.
Furthermore, he proposed utilising the excess storage capacity of 99 oil tanks which can store one million metric tonnes, located strategically at Trincomalee harbour, to transform Sri Lanka into an oil exporting country. Dissanayake suggested establishing a refinery in Trincomalee and storing the refined fuel in these tanks for export through the harbour.
Dissanayake asserted that the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) alone could not undertake such a project, emphasising the need for a joint venture between an NPP government, CPC and a foreign investor to revitalise the Trincomalee oil tank farm.
In addition, Dissanayake expressed confidence in the NPP’s support, claiming that government servants, Police, and Army personnel overwhelmingly back the NPP. He stated that the NPP enjoys widespread support and is poised to come into power despite all the challenges it faced.
