Nawa Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) leader Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne, passed away at 81, yesterday (25). He was known as a pioneer of left-wing politics in Sri Lanka and a fierce fighter against social injustices.
Karunaratne received his primary education from Matugama Ananda College and his secondary education from Ananda College Colombo.
He obtained a first-class pass in Electrical Engineering and received a Commonwealth scholarship to study at Cambridge University and obtained a PhD in 1970.
Karunaratne began politics with the Sri Lanka Sama Samaja Party and then after resigning from the party in 1972, he started the Nawa Sama Samaja Party in 1977. He also presented himself as a presidential candidate in 2010.
The body of Dr.Karunaratne is kept in a private funeral parlour in Colombo from today (26) to pay public respects. The funeral will be announced later.
