Old driving licences to be invalidated from 2025

Drivers holding old non-biometric heavy vehicle driver’s licences will be invalidated next year. They can now renew their licences Motor Traffic Commissioner General Nishantha Weerasinghe told the Daily News.

He stated that around 1.1 million old heavy vehicle driver’s licences would be cancelled as part of this process. He further explained that those affected will be given time to obtain new licences. However, individuals who do not wish to wait can now undergo a medical examination and apply for a new driver’s licence to replace their old one.

Discussions are already underway regarding the procedure for cancelling old licences and issuing new ones. In addition to heavy vehicle licences, Weerasinghe also mentioned that around 1 million light vehicle driver’s licences, which cannot be renewed will be invalidated soon.
