One person was killed and 37 others were injured on Saturday when a bus carrying a group of pilgrims from Pudaluoya, Kandy to Nelligala International Buddhist Centre met with an accident while going up the steep slope leading to the Buddhist Centre.
The deceased is Pahalgedara Sugathapala (79), a resident of Pundaluoya Halpola area, Police said.
Investigations have revealed that the accident occurred after the brakes of the bus failed while going up the steep slope. The bus which slid down after its brakes failed had rammed into a tree while coming down and had stopped.
Residents took steps to take the injured to the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital. It is also reported that there were nine children among the injured. According to villagers several accidents have taken place at the same location before. Two of the injured who were in serious condition have been transferred to the Kandy National Hospital while the rest of the injured are receiving treatment at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.
The driver of the bus is also among the injured and the Peradeniya Police is conducting investigations.
