Online token system for reserving dates operational

Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Vijitha Herath yesterday announced that an online token system for reserving passport application dates is now operational as of midnight on November 5.

The Minister explained that an agreement by the previous government with the passport supplier had limited the immediate importation of the necessary quantity of passports. Instead, the passports are being supplied in batches: 50,000 in October, 100,000 by the end of November, and another 100,000 by the end of December. This arrangement was pre-established, allowing no provision for the import of the full required amount of 750,000 passports at once.

Acknowledging the inconvenience caused to the public, Minister Herath assured that the Government has been actively working to resolve the issue. “Since midnight, many people have already applied for passports under the urgent category, and there is currently no queue for passports,” he stated.

He further noted that appointments for November have already been scheduled in advance, meaning that passports will be issued as per the Department’s token system. For new applications, the online appointment system is now available, providing a solution to the backlog.
