Officials unearthed only 20 metal rock blocks of various sizes, at a site in Wewagedara, where a treasure was rumoured to be buried by Saturday (23).The stone blocks were later broken into smaller pieces using a drilling machine but revealed no hidden items.
Over the course of three days, excavations were conducted under a Court order and concluded without unearthing any foreign or valuable artefacts. The excavations took place near the Wandurawa Rajamaha Viharaya on a paddy land taken over for the construction of the Central Expressway.
Although the two-day excavation, initially ordered by court on November 11, could not be completed on 21 and 22, police secured an extension to continue work on a third day. On the 23rd, by 1:15 pm, the collected stones were inspected by officers of the Police Special Task Force (STF). Their specialised equipment also failed to detect any significant findings.
Further examination of the stones, which were broken into smaller pieces over three hours, similarly yielded no results.The Wewagedara Police conducted the excavation under an order from the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court. The aim was to address concerns that the alleged treasure hunt was causing damage to the construction of the Central Expressway. The Department of Archaeology, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Government Analyst’s Department, Road Development Authority and Local Government officials supervised the operations.
Attanagalle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Prasad Fernando stated that a final report from the involved institutions will be submitted to the Attanagalle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (26) to determine further action. Until a suitable court directive is issued, the police have ensured security around the excavation site.
A large crowd gathered to witness the excavation, as the court had ordered the excavation to be conducted in a manner visible to the public. Senior police officers and the Mirigama Divisional Secretary were present during the proceedings.
