Open verdict over music teacher’s death

Following the post mortem examination the JMO has given an open verdict regarding the death of a retired music teacher in a house at Wijerama Road, Colombo 7 recently.

The JMO also has ordered to send her body parts to the Government Analyst for further examination. The deceased female teacher Mithrani Fernando Smith was 75.

Police suspect that she died on December 15 and she had been living alone. Police say that her younger brother’s son parks his car in the garden of the retired teacher’s house. He is said to reside in Moratuwa. He has told Police he saw her on December 15 around 3 pm and she was ready to conduct classes and was waiting for the children to arrive.

He had also told Police that when he returned at night, he found the doors of the house open and the electricity in the house had been cut off and he felt suspicious and called Police on the 119 hotline. Kuruduwatta Police found her lying on the floor of the house. Police called the 1990 ambulance service to the spot and medical personnel in the ambulance had checked her and informed she was dead.

Police have discovered that her husband died about one and a half to two years ago and since then she has been living alone in this house. The Police say that she has no children either. Police say the trip switch in the house was found to be off. Police had found a floor polishing machine on the floor where she fell. The machine was connected to electricity. Police have also observed that a wire was broken in one place of the machine.

It has been revealed during Police investigations, the gas cylinder in the kitchen, the laptop used by her and the mobile phone were missing from the house.

The husband of the deceased music teacher had died about one and a half years ago and it is said an agreement between the two had been reached to transfer the land with the two-storey house worth millions of rupees to a religious center, a senior police officer said.

Special police protection has been given to the house. Police are further investigating to determine whether the death was due to natural causes or murder.
