Opposition to field candidate for post of Speaker

The Opposition will also propose a member for the Speaker’s post during Tuesday’s (17) Parliament sittings, according to Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Nalin Bandara.

During a press conference in Colombo, he said, “We have no confidence that the next person appointed by the National People’s Power (NPP) as Speaker will be any different from the previous one. So we will propose an Opposition member for the post on Tuesday.”

Bandara noted that no name has been finalised yet, but one will be suggested after a SJB group meeting today.

He added, “We are very disappointed that we have to appoint a new Speaker again before a month has passed.

The former Speaker, Ashoka Ranwala, was elected unanimously, and we all supported his appointment at that time.”

Bandara added, “We plan to submit complaints to the relevant authorities, requesting the cancellation of the Parliamentary seats of those who misled the public by presenting false educational qualifications to secure votes.”
