Oshadi Sewwandi a soccer star in the making

Liyana Gunawardanage Oshadi Sewwandi one of the most outstanding football players of the Kalutara District is a multi talented grade nine student who has various achievements in the history of Kalutara St. John’s College, in education and sports at the school level to national level bringing honour and fame to her parents and school.

Oshadi who was born on . October. 29 2007 is the second child of Liyana Gunawardanage Nandana Prasad and and Wellawatta Arachchige Sakura Udhani of Kithulawa, Kalutara. She has a elder brother L.G. Seneth Sasindu and a younger brother L.G. Pidum S. Anjana.

Oshadi jonded St. John’s College primary school Palatota in January 2013 and excelled in the academic activities from grade one to five from an early age. After that she was drafted to Kalutara St. John’s College in 2017. In the course of time the school teacher in charge of sports and physical education Chandani Anagiyadda and school football coach Lakmal Sampath Kumara discovered her amazing sports talents there. based on this she started her sports career successfully and she participated in school , divisional, zonal, district, provincial and national level football competitions and revealed her talents in a very short period of time. As a result she was selected for the 20 member football pool to take part in the Sri Lanka under 12 football tour for Barcelona tournament .

Apart from this she participated in school levels several team sports and100 & 200 metres running events and made the school famous at the national level for her talents. The St. John’s College under 12 football team under her leadership won the Western Province championship , Sri Lanka inter school provincial football carnival (Milo road to Barcelona) girls tournament 2018 which was held at Musaeus College Kalutara North. This too may have been a big turning point in her sports career. It is noteworthy that the Renown football academy president Sridharan Pieris and coach M.K.J. Priyantha

Perera who observed her talents offered her the opportunity to receive free of charge additional football training facilities in the academy. Oshadi said I love football so much but the recent outbreak of the covid – 19 in the country and lack of proper training and limited sports resources found in our school were detrimental to the progress of my sports career

But the encouragements and guidance of the school principal K.A.L. Lakmal Gunrathne, vice principals, sports teacher in charge Chandani Anagiyadda, football coach M.L. Sampath Kumara and parents was instrumental in my successful sports career. She also said that if better training facilities and assistance are available her ambition in to showcase her talents and bring pride to the school and motherland at the national and international level.
