Over 100 schoolchildren killed in road accidents in 2023

At least 115 schoolchildren across the country have been killed in road accidents that have been officially reported so far this year, the Police Traffic Unit reported.

Police Traffic Unit Chief ASP Manoj Ranagala addressing the media on Wednesday (25) said that the deaths of the schoolchildren have been caused due to reckless driving.

According to Police data, six persons have been killed per day in road accidents in Sri Lanka and that once in every four hours, one death is reported, three seriously injured persons have been reported, and four persons have been reported with injuries requiring treatment, Ranagala said.

ASP Ranagala said that 2,363 people had died in road accidents in 2020, 2,513 persons were reported dead in 2021, and 2,515 people have been killed in road accidents in 2022, which shows an increase in accidents in the country.

Almost 10 percent of the deaths that have been reported consist of school students who are below the age of 18, ASP Ranagala added.

He pointed out that 150 deaths have been reported due to road accidents during the period from January 01 to October 15 this year.
