Over 12,000 lives lost in road accidents over five years – Traffic Police

In the past five years, road accidents in Sri Lanka have resulted in the tragic loss of 12,140 lives and left over 33,259 people permanently disabled, according to Traffic Police data. After illnesses and aging, road accidents are the leading cause of premature death in the country. Police officials from the Traffic Division stated that they have already taken fundamental steps to mitigate this road ‘terrorism’ under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme.

Despite various obstacles and oppositions, the Police are committed to utilising this opportunity to the fullest to protect innocent lives from road accidents. Over the past five years, the country has experienced a total of 11,581 fatal accidents resulting in 12,140 deaths.

According to Police Traffic Headquarters statistics, from 2020 to November 30, 2024, there have been 117,970 traffic accidents in the country.

The year 2024 alone saw the highest number of accidents, with 24,589 incidents recorded. During this period, there were 44,440 accidents causing minor injuries.

Police Traffic Division data reveals that as of November 30, 2024, there were 2,005 public transport bus accidents, including 515 SLTB bus accidents and 1,490 private bus accidents. Within this timeframe, SLTB buses were involved in 50 fatal accidents, while private buses were involved in 148 fatal accidents.

A senior Police officer stated that the efforts to mitigate ‘road terrorism’ under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme are expected to significantly reduce road accidents and instil road discipline.
