The Finance Ministry has announced that over 1,850,000 families qualify for benefits under the Aswesuma welfare benefit programme.
Finance State Minister Shehan Semasinghe stated that the Aswesuma programme’s beneficiaries can now voluntarily contribute a portion of their received funds to government welfare projects.
According to Semasinghe, beneficiaries can choose to allocate a part of their monthly benefits to specific government welfare accounts without any hindrance. This option has been communicated to all banks by Welfare Benefits Board Chairman Jayantha Wijerathna. Previously, banks were instructed not to use Aswesuma benefits for any other payments.
However, Semasinghe clarified that beneficiaries are now allowed to support government welfare projects, provided these contributions do not contradict the objectives of the Aswesuma programme.
