Over 3.5Mn people abstain from voting at 2024 Presidential Election – EC Saman Sri Ratnayake

The Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake said that more than 3.5 million people have not used their vote this time at the 2024 Presidential Election.

Speaking to the media, the Elections Commissioner said that 21.54 percent of the people who were eligible to vote this time had not cast their votes during the Presidential Election.

Ratnayake said that out of the 17.1 million voters, approximately 3.5 million have not used their votes at the 2024 Presidential Election. He said that usually more than 80 percent of votes are received at a Presidential election based on the past voting trends.

However, this time the voting percentage has dropped compared to the total votes cast at previous Presidential polls.

The Elections Commissioner said that in order to increase the voter percentage, the responsibility lies not only on the side of the Election Commission but on the political parties to encourage voters to come to the polling centres to cast their votes.

He said that the Election Commission only facilitates the voting to take place at all polling centres in the country and requested all political parties to make necessary arrangements to encourage higher voter turnout during elections.
