Over 30 railway stations receive awards for cleanliness

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) in collaboration with the Railways Department recently presented awards and certificates to officials and employees of over 30 railway stations for keeping stations, railway yards and the surrounding environment clean and tidy to attract commuters.

According to the CEA, the Ella, Veyangoda and Rambukkana Railway Stations were selected as the best three environmentally friendly railway stations. The Kotte, Trincomlee, Hatton, Ahungalla and Ukuwela Railway Stations received merit awards.

The CEA initiated this ‘Environmentally Friendly Railway Stations’ competition after a careful study of the poor state of some railway stations and their environment.

Before conducting this competition, the CEA conducted seminars and workshops for officials and employees of the railway stations in Colombo, Anuradhapura and Nawalapitiya on how to carry out proper garbage collection and removal, clean railway properties and plant valuable trees and plants in railway yards, for the benefit of commuters.

The presentation of awards was conducted at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe with the participation of State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura and CEA Director General Hemantha Jayasinghe.
