In celebration of Christmas today (25), a total of 389 prisoners have been granted special Presidential pardons.
The pardons were issued under the powers vested in the President by Article 34(1) of the Constitution.
According to the Commissioner of Prisons (Spokesperson) Gamini B. Dissanayake, the pardon primarily applies to inmates incarcerated for minor offences. Among them, 364 prisoners have been released due to the waiving of fines they were unable to pay.
Of the prisoners released today, four are women. The largest number of pardoned prisoners, 48, are from the Mahara Prison, followed by 45 from the Wariyapola Prison and 41 from the Welikada Prison.
Additionally, 33 prisoners will be released from the Anuradhapura Prison, 20 from the Kuruwita Prison, 17 each from the Galle, Bogambara, and Jaffna Prisons, and 13 from the Polonnaruwa Prison. In total, 389 prisoners from 29 correctional facilities across the country will be freed today in honour of Christmas.
